1. Establishment

The Southern Institute of Ecology (SIE) was established under Decision No. 1030/QĐ-KHCNVN dated August 6th 2012 by the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology. The Institute consists of four departments: the Dept. of Botany, Dept. of Landscape and Ecology, Dept. of Zoology, and the Center for Biodiversity and Development (CBD), the latter of out which the Institute originally grew. The Institute studies biodiversity, tropical ecosystems (particularly in Vietnam’s South) and implements programs on education, training and community development.

2. Mission and Scientific field activities

The Southern Institute of Ecology is the first institution to specialize in southern Vietnam’s ecology. Its major scientific activities are:

  • Investigate and study the structure and function of ecosystem, individual ecology, population ecology and human ecology;
  • Research fauna, flora and fungi of southern Vietnam; discover, evaluate, and recommend  strategies to restore and develop threatened fauna, flora and fungi species, and protect genetic resources;
  • Study impacts of climate change on biodiversity, propose methods to respond to, and minimalize the impacts of, climate change;
  • Study and evaluate biodiversity resources of terrestrial ecosystem, water bodies, provide management strategies, sustainable use of ecosystems and bioresources;
  • Research and discover sensitive ecosystems, predict ecological dynamics, propose methods to utilize and restore ecosystems;
  • Educate and raise awareness of biodiversity and sustainable development;
  • Provide services on science and technologies related to ecology and bioresources;
  • Educate and train researchers on ecology and bioresources.

5. Direction of research and development

5.1 Direction of research

In the next few years, SIE will concentrate on:

  • Research on natural ecosystems, investigation and evaluation of diversity of typical ecosystems of southern Vietnam, mainly in the central highlands, the south-central coast, the southeast and the Mekong delta. Inventory and study important species, communities in either natural or manmade ecosystems, species sensitive to climate change, environment and invasive species;
  • Research on conservation, development, and sustainable use of natural resources and biodiversity, especially of special-use forests, biospheres, and wetlands.
  • Establish research on functions and dynamics of ecosystems and bioresources in order to build a database to research, conservation, proper use of natural resources and sustainable development;
  • Research and evaluate impacts of climate change and human activities on ecosystems and natural resources, predict and propose methods to restore habitat and respond to other scenarios;
  • Develop climate change adaptation models, management models, sustainable use of natural resources, within which focusing on community-based conservation and use, and ethnology.
  • Develop, and supplement botany and zoology specimens to museums; apply new technology in taxonomy, build a scientific database of biodiversity that is reliable enough for monitoring;
  • Strengthen education, cooperation with national and international researchers; the organization aims to provide  high-quality human resources on ecology, natural resources and environment;
  • Develop communication programs for raising awareness about nature conservation and sustainable development.

5.2 Direction in Development

During the construction and development period, SIE will gradually strengthen, develop and enhance equipment, facilities, staff of scientific research, and implementation of scientific research as the following specific plans

  1. Up to 2016:

  • Consolidate the operation of SIE together with fully equipped facilities and equipment for research.
  • Strengthen the researcher group in terms of both quantity and quality, send staff to attend intensive training courses, education in ecology, biodiversity and climate change.  Projects to expand the body of researchers, with the Institute having, in 2020, 45-50 operational members.
  • Expend cooperation with other national and international organizations
  1. Phase to 2020 and vision to 2030

  • SIE to be a cutting-edge organization in biodiversity research and conservation in the Mekong region, contributing to address the central question of sustainable development.
  • SIE will become the lead unit on southern Vietnam’s ecology with high quality researchers working at a level similar to other countries in region and who promote integration with other countries in the world.
  • SIE will become an institute that can provide realistic methods for biodiversity conservation and adaptation to climate change.
  • Expend international cooperation; focus on long-term cooperation with universities and organizations in training, research, and development of related fields.
